Explore Johnsonville

Johnsonville is a large suburb in northern Wellington, seven kilometres north of the city centre. It is situated at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge, on the main route to Porirua. Johnsonville is a decently-sized residential and commercial suburb, with everything you could need nearby. Johnsonville is always a hub of activity. Slotted into the valley at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge, cars stream along the main street, and around the triangle that forms the suburb’s heart.

The largest of the northern suburbs, it is the stomping ground for people from the surrounding areas, providing the closest shopping area outside Wellington. Hataitai is on important transport links between the central city and Wellington International Airport, to the south of Evans Bay on the isthmus at Rongotai. It is at the eastern end of the Mount Victoria Tunnel and the bus-only Hataitai Tunnel, built in 1907 for trams, making Hataitai a popular place to live.

Johnsonville - 1

Jville is pretty convenient with good public transport to the city, no more than a 10min drive to town. I like it because Johnsonville has everything, supermarkets, Asian groceries, police station, parks, library, mall, vet, medical centre, dentist, optometrist, bakeries, fish n chips and all the takeaway joints… Pretty much everything you need. – Maru, Johnsonville resident of 8 years
